About Us
The Lewisburg Garden Club’s purpose is to stimulate interest in and knowledge of gardening, to aid in the protection of trees, plants, birds and scenic beauty and to cooperate in beautifying public grounds.
Lewisburg Civic Club members with a special interest in gardening founded the Lewisburg Garden Club in 1948. The initial meeting was held at the home of our first president, Esther Garman, with 15 members attending. A local newspaper wrote that the club “…has been organized for those interested in flowers, gardening and floral design and arrangements.”
Over the past 70+ years, the club has evolved and grown. Floral design and arrangements are (is) still a priority, but we also come together to create and maintain public gardens, provide scholarships and learn about such diverse topics as organic farming, creating essential oils from flowers, building rain barrels and the importance of native plants to the habitat of birds, bees and butterflies.
Today we have more than 60 members who bring diverse interests, experiences and backgrounds to the Lewisburg Garden Club. Some have grown up in the Lewisburg area, while many have come from other regions and other countries. Many members have extensive knowledge of plants, soils and growing seasons, expertise in floral arrangements, or experience in landscaping; others join us armed only with curiosity and a desire to learn. Our programs and projects provide members with a variety of opportunities to learn, to serve and to lead.
All are invited to visit a Lewisburg Garden Club meeting and become involved. We meet the second Monday of every month at 12 noon—with the exception of January, July and August—in the Fellowship Hall at St. John’s United Church of Christ on Route 192. Meetings begin with a social hour, followed by a formal meeting. Programs begin at approximately 1 p.m. and are open to all.
